Enchanted Way - David Hobson sings folksongs from the British Isles on this gorgeous new CD album!

His heritage is Welsh, English and Scottish, and the rare and haunting beauty of his voice is ideally suited to the repertoire, but until now David Hobson has never recorded an album of music from the British Isles.

‘I have an inherent love for these glorious folk songs, and some of them have been in my concert repertoire for years,’ says Australia’s most popular tenor on the launch of his new album Enchanted Way, featuring best-loved songs from England, Scotland, Ireland and Wales. ‘It’s the kind of album I’ve wanted to make for many years.’

Backed by the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra conducted by Benjamin Northey, and with all-new arrangements by Jessica Wells, the album was recorded in the heat of inspiration, with David and the MSO being joined by Australian music legend (and friend) Paul Kelly, the Flinders String Quartet, and a host of leading folk musicians.

‘We wanted to give fresh interpretations to these great songs but also to preserve some sense of
authenticity so we’ve used drones, as well as accordion, Celtic fiddle, and bodhran to capture the
essence of these most evocative songs .’

Irish classics like Carrickfergus, She Moved Through the Fair, and Raglan Road (a line from which
provides the album’s title) are included alongside quintessential Scottish ballads like Loch Lomond
and Skye Boat Song, and English favourites Bushes and Briars and Foggy Foggy Dew.

For some of the Welsh repertoire, including Y Dreyn (The Dove) and David of the White Rock, David
recorded his vocals in the language of his ancestors. ‘The Welsh language is so poetic, and it really
lends itself to the beautiful melodies of these songs,’ David says.

Cameo appearances include David’s regular concert collaborator - the singer Janine Maunder - and
pianist Calvin Bowman, who, along with conductor Northey is part of the album’s ‘Ballarat connection’.

David says that the creative inspiration of all involved in the project made it one of the most satisfying
experiences of his long recording career, epitomised by the most famous song on the album.

‘Danny Boy is one of my most requested songs in concert and I’ve sung it in many different
arrangements, but when faced with the prospect of recording such an iconic piece, we were all
drawn to the idea of doing it unaccompanied. The feeling in the studio that afternoon as we recorded
it was one of many special moments that we had in the making of this album.’

‘In the end, it all came down to just the singer and the song – and the perfection of these timeless melodies.’

Their one-off duet from Bizet’s The Pearl Fishers became one of the most-played
tracks in Australian recording history, topping the Classic 100 Opera survey and featuring
in countless CD compilations. Now, for the first time, operatic superstars David Hobson
and Teddy Tahu Rhodes have joined forces to record an entire album of glorious duets
for tenor and bass. In an atmosphere of high emotion at the end of 2008, the two friends
assembled at Eugene Goossens Hall in Sydney to record much-loved songs of hope,
faith and glory, as if in defiance of the glum mood of the times brought on by the world
economic crisis. Both artists brought with them their wish-lists of favourite songs designed
to uplift the spirit and to showcase the uncanny beauty of their two voices when joined
together. Highlights of a luminous album include O Holy Night, Amazing Grace, Abide
With Me, and sublime solo versions of the spiritual Poor Wayfaring Stranger and Leonard
Cohen’s classic Hallelujah.

DAVID HOBSON – A Little Closer

Best-selling Australian singer David Hobson stretches out and relaxes in his new album of
great pop classics. He’ll grab your heart with his amazing cover versions of Sting’s Fields
of Gold
and Chris Isaak’s devastating Wicked Game. The laid-back warmth of Under the
Milky Way
and Have I Told You Lately sits alongside two compelling original works by
David and Phil Buckle. Just like his previous and outstandingly successful recording
The Promise, this is an album of gorgeous songs, beautifully arranged and sung, that you’ll
want to play over and over again.

“Working in the studio with a small ensemble while we rehearsed and recorded these
pop songs was a great joy. I really felt like I was a part of a team – reminiscent for Chong Lim
and myself of our days playing in a band at Melbourne University.” says David. “I’ve been very
fortunate to have Chong, Stuart Fraser, Craig Newman, Angus Burchall and my writing partner
Phil Buckle as the core ensemble. They’ve been so creative and generous with their musical
contribution and have given the overall sound of the CD a great spirit.” These songs are of a
more intimate nature than my last album, The Promise, and hopefully with the warm atmosphere
created by this fantastic team the music will sound ‘a little closer’.”

David Hobson is one of Australia’s best known operatic and contemporary performers. He grew
up in country Victoria and as a youngster sang in church choirs and local musicals, fronted
rock and jazz bands and wrote music. First coming to critics’ attention with his handsome looks
and award-winning portrayal of Rodolfo in la Bohème, David has managed to switch effortlessly
between opera, pop and rock. He became a favourite with television audiences after appearing
on Channel 7’s DANCING WITH THE STARS and winning two series of IT TAKES TWO. David
has won numerous awards including Operatic Performer of the Year, The Age Performing Arts
Award for Best Performer in Opera, Sydney Critics Circle Award and an ARIA Award. David is
also an award-winning composer with notable film scores to his credit including the soundtrack
to ONE PERFECT DAY which was named Best Music Score by the Film Critics Circle. David’s
album, THE PROMISE, reached Number 1 on the ARIA Classical charts and has rarely been
out of the Top 20 since.

DAVID HOBSON – The Promise

In this album, David presents music with an unashamedly popular flavour: songs of
our own time, coming straight from the heart.

David grew up in country Victoria and as a youngster sang in church choirs and
local musicals, fronted rock and jazz bands and wrote music. While demonstrating his
rock musical Macbeth to the Victoria State Opera, he was persuaded to become a
classical tenor on the basis of his distinctive singing voice, and joined the cast of the
highly successful Broadway version of The Pirates of Penzance.

David went on to perform many operatic roles including his award-winning performances
as Rodolfo in the Baz Luhrmann's production of La bohème and Orpheus in Gluck's
Orphée et Eurydice
. Outside of opera he performs extensively in concert and appears
at major events including an exclusive performance for Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II
and the AFL Grand Final. David is well known to television audiences from his appearances
on Carols in the Domain, Carols by Candlelight, It Takes Two and Dancing with the Stars.

David is also a highly successful composer whose works include a music theatre version
of Macbeth, the chamber opera Remembering Rosie and the soundtrack to the film One
Perfect Day
, which was named Best Music Score by the Film Critics Circle of Australia
in 2004.

His discography includes a number of opera DVDs (including the aforementioned internationally
popular La bohème), top-selling classical CDs, a collection of original compositions with
David Hirschfelder and a duet album with Anthony Warlow.
